Over the past few years, many have watched in horror as retirement accounts vaporized, jobs disappeared, and savings dried up.

What do you do if you’re planning for retirement or are already in the retirement years?

John E. Nelson tackles all these issues in his new book, “What Color is Your Parachute for Retirement?”

He says we all have our own tracks, including our own passions and dangers, and he’s helping people find the way forward that makes the most sense for their situation.

One of the first areas that most people need to re-examine is how they view retirement, John says. He says many expect to be able to continue with their current lifestyles but that’s not the case for the vast majority of retirees.

As a lifestage planning expert, he helps people plan for and design a new way of life, whether that includes part-time jobs in retirement, moving to more inexpensive locations and taking care of their health.

He says the planning process is valuable, even when the plan you come up with goes out the window.

John discusses how the three traditional pillars of retirement — Social Security, pension plans and personal savings — are no longer enough for most people. He has suggestions and tips for new strategies to follow.

Plus, he offers advice for people already in the retirement age group, including those who are leaving retirement and getting back in the workforce.
