“Gilligan’s Island” hit the airwaves in 1964, running for only three seasons. Ever since, though, it’s never stopped airing through syndication. It’s become the longest running show in syndication history and has aired in more than 30 languages.

What is it about this quirky show that’s so enduring? Dawn Wells, who played the girl-next-door Mary Ann has a few theories. In her new book, “What Would Mary Ann Do? A Guide for Life,” Dawn looks back on her iconic role and explains how we could all stand to think a bit more like Mary Ann these days.

She laments the difficult time today’s parents have in contending with things like the Internet, cell phones and an emphasis on sex. She shares how her book can open the door to conversations, without being preachy.

Plus, why did “Gilligan’s Island” get the axe, even as it remained in the Top 10? She shares what she thinks happened.
