What if you learned you had a rare genetic condition that caused you to grow hundreds of tumors throughout your body, but there was nothing doctors could do to remove them? What would you do?

When Tony Mixon learned he suffered from this disease, he didn’t feel sorry for himself. He decided to put himself on the line to run for what he couldn’t run from.

The condition is called neurofibromatosis, and it causes tumors to grow in nerve tissues. Tony has more than 100 tumors in his brain and along his spine. This genetic disorder affects 1 in 3,000 births.

Since so few people know about it, Tony decided to do something about it. Despite the health concerns, he ran 360 miles, from Jacksonville, Florida, to Miami Beach to raise awareness for this disease.

And it worked. His story was picked up by national media outlets but Tony says he wants to keep teaching others about this condition and continue raising money to fight it.

Tony explains how these tumors had been growing his whole life but weren’t diagnosed until he was 21.

Plus, find out why doctors will never be able to completely remove the tumors from his body.
