This Surviving & Thriving segment is presented by Florida Hospital. With the right kind of care and support and the right attitude, it’s possible to not only survive life’s greatest challenges but to thrive in the aftermath.

David Clark’s story sounds like a Hollywood movie. He grew up poor and homeless, living out of his father’s pickup truck. With no formal education, he became the owner of a chain of 13 retail stores by the time he was 29 years old. Then the bottom fell out and he became a binge drinking, pill popping, 320-pound alcoholic.

He found a way to turn it all around, though. Today, he’s a professional athlete and the author of a fascinating and inspiring autobiography called Out There: A Story of Ultra Recovery.

David talks to Growing Bolder Radio about the path that led him to the point where he had to decide if he was going to spiral to a true rock bottom or if he was going to show his kids what a comeback looks like.

So, at 320 pounds, David started training for a grueling 100-mile trek through the rugged Colorado terrain. He explains why he knew baby steps wasn’t an option: he had to do something that seemed truly impossible. Find out how he evolved from trying to change his behavior to changing the entire concept of who he thought he was and could be.

Listen to this thoughtful and frank interview with David and get inspired to overcome the things overcoming you back in life. Plus, he explains how he helps other overcome their demons through his Superman Project. To learn more, visit thesupermanproject.org.
