The key to active aging is active living. We all have a great deal of power over how we age. Don’t sit back. Lean in. Turn Active Aging Week into an active aging life by understanding the ICAA’s 7 Dimensions of Wellness and embracing the keys to whole person health.
Being good stewards and caretakers of our environment is one of the seven dimensions of wellness. Whether it’s taking a walk, kayaking, going for a hike or a boat ride, connecting with nature has great benefits.
As important as our social connections are to our wellness, research shows that our inner connection affects our overall wellbeing, too. Having a spiritual life is one of the 7 Dimensions of Wellness. Living with meaning and purpose, guided by our personal values, provides us with a framework to navigate the inevitable challenges of life with peace and inner strength.
There is no secret formula for how to age well; it takes strength, both physical and mental. You can strengthen your body through exercise, but how do you strengthen your mind? One way is through social engagement.
One of the most important decisions we make for our wellness is how we spend our days. Whether it involves paid work, volunteering, caregiving, or creative expression, our choices and activities that comprise how we spend our days become how we spend our lives. While one chapter of our professional activities may be complete, it’s never too late to begin something new, even in our 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond. And the good news is today there are more choices and opportunities than ever before.
Physical wellness is about the lifestyle choices we make daily: what we eat, how we sleep, and how we manage stress. It’s adapting to our individual lifestyles and finding a way to keep moving forward.
When it comes to active aging, there may not be a more wide-reaching source of wellbeing than focusing on our intellectual health. When we give our brain a boost, the whole body benefits. It is never too late to focus on our mental health, especially considering how many fun ways there are to engage the mind.
Feelings are the lens through which we view the world. Learning to embrace the full spectrum of our emotions, both good and bad, is a key to active aging and adding more healthy years to our lives.
The 20th Anniversary of Active Aging Week, presented by Humana, is a reminder that the lifestyle choices we all make on a daily basis don’t just add years to our life but, more importantly, more life to our years
