Kirk Bauer has devoted more than 35 years of service to Disabled Sports USA.

After spending a dozen years volunteering with the group, he became its executive director 23 years ago.

He knows how important the games can be. As a noncommissioned officer in the U.S. Army, Bauer lost a leg from a hand grenade during an ambush while serving in a combat unit in Vietnam in 1969.

He talked to Growing Bolder about the joys of athletics and how sports can change lives.
