He was a dominating swimmer who was looking forward to making his mark on the world in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. But six days before the Olympic Qualifying Time Trials he came down with appendicitis and underwent an emergency appendectomy. Everyone thought his Olympic dream had been shattered, but they were about to learn something about Jeff’s character.
