Although Doris Roberts has a busy career, acting in more than 30 feature films, numerous Broadway shows and countless TV series, she still had time to fight for the cause of ageism.

She played meddling mother and wife Marie Barone on the TV show “Everybody Loves Raymond,” but the reason we really love Roberts is for her advocacy against ageism.

Roberts testified before the U.S. Senate on the subject and addressed the Committee on Aging in 2002. She says it’s unfair that just because someone lives beyond the age of 50 that they can’t work anymore.

She talks to Growing Bolder about the opportunities for older (not old! She’s trying to strike that word from everyone’s vocabulary) people in Hollywood and how they’re perceived when in the limelight.
