Think the only way to make a difference is to be born into money? Doc Hendley was working odd jobs, playing music and serving beer — enjoying life, but not motivated to do much more.

But in late 2003, he learned something that disturbed him to the core. He started researching the world’s water crisis, and discovered that unclean drinking water was killing more of the world’s children than HIV/AIDS, malaria and measles combined, but was only getting a fraction of the research money

So he founded “Wine To Water,” a fundraising and awareness event featuring beer, wine, food and great music. It was such a hit that Wine To Water is now a worldwide charitable organization, raising funds to bring clean water to nine (and counting!) countries.

See what a year in one of the world’s most desperate areas did to change his life, and why he says he hopes people will ignore the voices in their heads that tell them they can’t succeed at following their passions.
