John Wall is a 62-year old considered the "fastest baby boomer on earth." He runs the 100m in 11.98 seconds, which is as fast as many athletes less than half his age. His life story is just as impressive.
Born in Dublin and raised in Hong Kong by parents who were both prisoners of war, Wall had a cosmopolitan childhood and spoke mainly Chinese until he was eight. He moved to Australia in the late 1960s working in film, television and advertising and traveled the world extensively. He was one of the first Westerners to see the Killing Fields in Kampuchea.
Wall had been a champion sprinter in his youth until he contracted tuberculosis. When his oldest son, Sean, died from a heroin overdose, John went back to the track. In 2006 he was ranked number one in the world in the 60 – 65 age group for both the 100m and 200m. His goal now is to win Gold at the World Masters Games in Italy in September and inspire others to stay active. John is proof age is no barrier to achieving your goals.
