Update: January 17, 2008: Roger shares the story of the childhood gift  that changed his life and led to some of the greatest music in the history of rock and roll. Check out Roger's vintage transistor radio collection.

From Growing Bolder: Roger founded the Byrds in 1964. The group's first single, "Mr. Tambourine Man," was #1 worldwide and helped make both the Byrds famous. McGuinn and the Byrds released 13 albums and turned out one hit after another including "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better," "Turn, Turn, Turn," "Eight Miles High," "My Back Pages" and "You Ain't Going Nowhere."

Fueled by McGuinns virtuosity and curiosity, the band helped create both folk rock and country rock. After disbanding the Byrds in 1973, McGuinn began a solo career and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.

Since 1995, Roger has been releasing free original recordings of traditional folk songs for download on his Folk Den Project. If you're into podcasting, you can also download them (for free!!) at iTunes under podcasts.

Roger and his wife Camilla have their own label- April First Productions. They have released three projects on April First. Camilla describes all three:

1. Limited Edition, 2004 -- folk, blues and rock 'n' roll. One of my favorite tracks is the tribute to George Harrison -- "If I needed Someone." We recorded it in Nashville with John Jorgenson and Stan Lynch. Both of these wonderful musicians recorded with Roger on the first Byrd's box set and "Back From Rio."

2. The Folk Den Project, 2005. This was one big project. Roger wanted to celebrate 10 years of The Folk Den. It's his favorite project on mcguinn.com where he posts a traditional folk song each month for free download in order to help preserve the music. While mixing the 100 songs of this four CD set at Roger's side and proof reading the 40-page booklet at the Summit Road Studios in Parker, Colo. , I thought we might be nuts. Who was going to care about 100 folk songs? It turns out. A lot of people. Even Rolling Stone called it "...near perfect."

3. Live From Spain, 2006. Every Saturday morning when we're at home, we commit ourselves to creative Saturdays. Roger records and I usually work on the blog. One Saturday, I decided that a real creative thing to do would be to clean my desk. In the process, I found the master from a show in Spain. It was recorded for radio broadcast so the quality was exceptional for a live recording. I took it to Roger thinking we might use it for the APAP conference. He put it on and as I was walking out of his studio, I stopped in my tracks. It not only had a good sound, it was an unusual show. We decided to press it for the fans who have been asking me for a copy of Roger's concert. Roger's shows are all slightly different, but this one will bring back the memories.

In July 2005, I wrote the first "Roadie Report" for Roger's web page. I wasn't sure I wanted this personal road diary to come under scrutiny of the world, but several different prompts set me to writing. After a few BLOG entries, I received an email from...

Family

Camilla and I spend most of our time on the road, driving coast-to-coast in our custom van. Along the way we write music, play concerts, explore country roads and enjoy the company of one another, our familiy, friends and fans.

Goals

I just want to keep doing it. I love what I do. I love writing songs, performing, singing for people. I love traveling with Camilla. I don't really want to do anything else.

My Favorites

Interests

I've always been interested in technology. I enjoy producing and engineering my own CD's. I'm an early adopter and have even written product reviews for major technology blogs.  I've figured out a way to check my Email while I'm on a train or in my van. I use my cellphone and computer to get internet access for only $15 a month.  You can see how I do it here.

I'm always looking for ways to be more energy effecient and have even built my own solar ice maker. You can see it here.

Passions/Hobbies

In the spring of 1956, my grandfather gave me a new gadget for Christmas called a transistor radio. I would put the Regency TR-1 in my pocket, turn it up loud and ride my bicycle. It was during one of those rides that I first heard Elvis Presley singing "Heartbreak Hotel." I begged for a guitar for my 14th birthday and got a Harmony 6-string. I still love and collect old transistor radios because of the memories they bring back. You can see my radio collection here.

Heroes

I aspire to be like Andres Segovia. He was in his nineties and booked into Carnegie Hall when he died. I thought, "Wow, that's really cool. To be able to do it until you die, to die with your boots on."

My music leads to me inspiring men and women all over the world. Here's some cell phone video of a recording session in Nashville with my friend Dolly Parton.
