THE GREATEST GIFT

My knee-jerk response to this question brought me back to a football game many years ago. My team kicked a meaningless field goal on the last play of the game to win by 10 points. The coach was loudly criticized for running up the score, rather than taking a knee and ending the game. For me the kick was not meaningless, as it allowed me to recoup sizeable gambling losses. As a result, I didn't have to move out of my house and bunk with Jimmy Hoffa. It was the last bet I ever made!
On more serious reflection,my mother waking up in a hospital after being in a comma for 6 weeks, was the greatest gift I could have hoped for. She was given Last Rites and the doctors gave her the slimmest chance for survival. They said in the unlikely event that she wakes up all you could expect would be for her to be in a vegetative state without brain function. 10 years ago she opened her eyes in the hospital and went through extensive rehabilitation. Today she is as sharp and feisty as ever.
