First Day of Retirement

This is my first blog. It chronicles the first day of my retirement. The information is copied and pasted from a book that I wrote on baby boomer retirement. If the blogging police deem this a crime, I am guilty as charged.

The next day I awoke at the usual time, around 7:30, and I went downstairs. My wife was up and about cooking breakfast and getting the house in order. Today was a rare day off for her. She was and is a substitute teacher, secretary and school aid in our district. The school kids were off for Easter vacation. Ironically, her usual routine was being suspended at the same time that my retirement was beginning. “Well, does a retired man want breakfast?” she queried. Sure, pancakes would be great,” I responded.
We ate breakfast and small-talked about how yesterday’s day went at school. She asked me about my last day at work. We chatted about our three children. The oldest is working in the business world. The other two are students attending Penn State University. In about 45 minutes we covered every possible topic that we had in common. I glanced at my watch. It was almost 8:30 in the morning and I could not think of single subject with which to engage my wife in conversation. Finally, to break the awkward silence, I asked my wife what time we would be having lunch and whether she had a preprinted menu that I could study. She started to laugh. “You’d better get a new job real soon or we’re both going to go crazy.” It wasn’t even lunchtime on my first day in retirement and my wife was reading me the riot act
