In 1932: The first Winter Olympics is held in the United States in Lake Placid, New York.
In 1938: The animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is released and has major success in the box-office, making more money than any other motion picture up until this point.
In 1959: The Barbie Doll is invented. Ruth Handler, one of the founders of the Mattel Company, creates the doll. Barbie is named after Ruth's daughter. Later on, when the Ken doll is made, it is named after Ruth's son.
In 1974: Patty Hearst, the 19-year-old newspaper heiress, is kidnapped from her apartment in Berkeley, California by the Symbionese Liberation Army, a small U.S. leftist group.
