On This Date:
In 1547: Ivan the Terrible becomes the first Czar of Russia.

In 1581: The English Parliament outlaws Roman Catholicism.

In 1920: One year after it was ratified, the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, which prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages, goes into effect.

In 1968: The Youth International Party (Yippies) is founded by Abbie Hoffman, Anita Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Nancy Kurshan and Paul Krassner, among others. The political party staged theatrical pranks and became famous during the Chicago Seven trial of 1969.

In 1986: The Internet Engineering Task Force, which develops and promotes Internet standards, meets for the first time.

In 1988: CBS fires sports commentator Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder one day after he tells a TV station in Washington, D.C., that African-American athletes are better because "he has been bred to be that way. This goes all the way back to the Civil War when the slave owner would breed his big black to his big woman so that he could have a big black kid."

In 1991: The United States of America declares war on Iraq, beginning the Persian Gulf War.

In 2003: Space shuttle Columbia lifts off from Cape Canaveral, Fla. for its ill-fated mission. As Columbia re-enters the atmosphere 16 days later, it disintegrates over Texas, killing all seven crew members.

In 2005: Romanian Adriana Iliescu becomes the oldest woman in the world to give birth, at age 66. She delivers a baby created from a donated egg and donated sperm.

In 2006: After more than 36 years on the run, Ernest Johnson Jr., 55, who deserted the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, is arrested in Texas.
