Roadside Works of Art

The Florida Highwaymen were 26 mostly self-taught artists, all African-Americans, who traveled the state in the '50s and '60s creating landscape paintings and selling them right along the roadside. Ignored at the time, today their works are highly sought-after collectibles. It's something that seems like a miracle to Highwayman James Gibson, and sounds pretty bold to us.

    James,
The few paintings I saw in your video were absolutely beautiful!!!  I'm so glad you never gave up.

My husband and I went to the Appleton Museum in Ocala just to see the "Highwayman" exhibit maybe a year or two ago.  Were any of your paintings in that show?  Do you have a website where I can see more of your work?  My son has a great "eye" for artwork and might want to start a whole "collection" for his new house.  Who knows... I might even buy one or two for my own collection.

People need to see what Florida really looks like... in its "natural state"... not just the Developer and theme park views.  Please keep painting - forever!  You have a real GIFT!
    Sincerely,
    Susan
