Today is Sunday, March 9, 2008. There are 297 days left in the year and 239 days left until Election Day.

4 Fun Facts about Daylight Saving Time:

1. Contrary to popular belief, DST was not invented by Benjamin Franklin, although he is credited with first suggesting the idea satirically and anonymously in 1784 as a way to save candles. Eventually proposed and lobbied for by Englishman William Wilmett in 1905, it was actually the Germans and their WWI allies that began using it first. The US was the last to follow suit.

2. The correct terminology is "Daylight Saving Time," not Daylight SavingS Time, as we've been calling it all these years.

3. Hawaii, Arizona, Puerto Rico and some other warm places don't observe DST because, well, they're just so darn sunny all the time.

4. DST causes a 5% reduction in crashes fatal to pedestrians, so for the next 6 months, it's officially 5% safer for you to cross the road without looking both ways.
