A Graceful Motherhood
Posted May 16, 2008, 10:23 am in Family by Growing Bolder48-year-old Nancy Grace has made a name for herself -- make that several names! She's an attorney, a journalist, a TV host, and now, a new mother! Grace had a lot of challenges along the way, including the brutal and tragic death of her fiance, and after finding new love, a difficult time getting pregnant.
Grace recently shared her story - and a picture of her twins - with Good Housekeeping magazine. In the interview, she is holding little John David and Lucy Elizabeth, and while they sleep, she's the one sobbing. Grace talks about marriage, pregnancy, and these miracle babies. "Oh, I'm so sorry," she says, sniffling. "I just...I still can't believe they're here, you know? I can't believe they're mine and that this is my life. I just never believed this could happen to me."
In the GH interview, Grace won't discuss whether she used fertility treatments to get pregnant, saying it's a private matter. She did talk about her pregnancy, calling it a roller coaster ride, complete with complications like high blood pressure and breathing difficulties. Doctors had to admit Grace to the hospital five times, and finally she had to undergo an emergency caesarian section. "I remember the doctor said to me, 'How does November 4th sound for a birthday?' And I was so out of it, I just looked at him and said in disbelief, 'Is that today?'" Lucy and John were born more than two months premature, weighing just two pounds, 15 ounces and five pounds, one ounce. The babies stayed in the intensive care unit until they were healthy enough to come home.
Grace has always been a bit of a controversial figure, and it hasn't ended with motherhood. After getting back to work as a TV host, Grace spoke out about an Internet video that shows a nanny roughly handling 8-month-old twins. "I'd kill her," Grace told her viewers. "And I wouldn't even use a weapon. I'd just use these," she said, holding up her bare hands.
"Here's the thing," Grace told GH. "To suggest that you can't be both a mother who is completely in love with her babies, and a professional who is tough and tenacious, is ridiculous. If anything, now I feel even more passionate about fighting for victims. Now it gets to me so much whenever we cover a story about a child who has been harmed or a baby who has been abandoned that the camera has to cut away from me because I need a moment to pull myself together. It makes me angrier than ever."
